Crizotinib is an oral capsule that should be taken twice daily at the prescribed dose, with or without food. Treatment is continuous with no "drug holidays" or planned breaks. Patients must strictly follow the instructions of their healthcare provider and not change the dose or stop taking the medication unless explicitly directed by a doctor. If certain side effects occur, the doctor may adjust the dose, temporarily interrupt, or permanently discontinue treatment. Do not take more than one dose at a time. For adults who have difficulty swallowing whole capsules, other dosage forms are available; consult your doctor for more information.
If a dose of Crizotinib is missed, take it as soon as possible, but note: if it is less than 6 hours until the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. If vomiting occurs after taking a dose, do not take an additional dose; simply take the next dose at the usual time. During treatment, avoid drinking grapefruit juice, eating grapefruit, or taking supplements containing grapefruit extract, as this may lead to harmful levels of Crizotinib in the blood. Additionally, other foods or drugs such as alcohol should be used with caution; it is advisable to consult your doctor in advance.
How to know if Crizotinib is working? Patients should continue to take the medication as prescribed. The doctor will periodically perform imaging scans (e.g., CT, MRI) to assess whether the tumor is responding to treatment. The frequency of scans is determined by the medical team. At the same time, active management of side effects is important: if nausea or vomiting occurs, eat small, frequent meals, avoid sweet or fried foods, and drink small amounts of water frequently; for diarrhea, stay hydrated; for constipation, increase dietary fiber; for edema, elevate the limbs and limit sodium intake. To help remember to take the medication twice daily, you can use the following methods: record the time you take the medication on a calendar or planner and check it off; use a weekly pill box with multiple compartments; keep a diary to record medication intake and symptoms; ask family or friends to remind you; or place the pill bottle in a visible spot (e.g., bedside table) but ensure it is out of reach of children and pets. If any discomfort or side effects occur, be sure to contact your doctor immediately. The doctor may adjust the treatment plan.
